I don't know where you are from and if you have ever heard of Ready, Steady, Cook - but I think the same idea for this show would work for your party. Basically you have the two teams (as you said) which you can call out once everyone arrives. Once there are the two teams decided you give them a bag of pre-bought grocery items (maybe have your parents decide this so you can still play the game without an advantage over your friends!) Each bag should cost the same amount and have roughly the same number of items in it.Side note: Make sure you have plenty of the basics in your house, such as flour, sugar, eggs, milk, stock, herbs & spices, tomatos, lettuce, cream, etc.
Start a timer (say an hour or two max) and have each team come up with a number of different recipies that they have to make.
Question: Where is everyone going to cook? Unless you have a commercial kitchen I would suggest one team gets the kitchen stove and the other team gets a BBQ (for example) - you may have to just share the oven if you only have one. (To make it fair you could do a coin toss and whoever wins gets their choice of the kitchen or BBQ)
Anyway, once the time is up each team presents their plates for your parents to taste and vote. Once voting has occurred everyone can swap dishes and taste each others concoctions! It's basically what you thought, just without using recipies. Looking up recipies takes too much time and part of the fun is to come up with your own unique recipies. Each team can also choose how many plates they are going to make - instead of telling them they can only make 2. Also, you don't need quite so much food - each bag only needs 4-5 items (ie. figs, cheese, puff pastry and veal steaks) because then you use these main ingreadients with other basic ingredients to make your meals! (such as figs wrapped in pastry with caramel sauce, veal stuffed with cheese and figs and wrapped in pastry - ok maybe you can take away one or two of the items for that one!, or cheesy pastry sticks...etc)
Side Note: Each team should have a captain, so you should probably lead one team and then choose another friend to lead the other team - it just stops too many leaders from trying to take over the groups!

I like Xanthe ♫'s answer.Another option would be like they do on the TV shows...prepare 2 identical baskets/boxes with the same ingredients and have each team come up with something using those ingredients. No cookbooks, no computer......just off the top of their heads. You might throw in something of a 'surprise' ingredient that isn't day to day.....something new or interesting and see what they come up with. Pickled asparagus or egglant or asian pears or wasabi powder.....anything would work as long as it's not an every day ingredient.
Of course, you will want to have all the staples on hand. You might also tell your guests to bring ONE ingredient. It could be an herb or spice, a bottle of oil, anything like that, just not a central part of any dish. No bags of frozen chicken breasts, lol.
Your party sounds like fun. I would love to be one of your judges.
If you are concerned about having too much food, you can always tell your teams how many servings to make.....say if you have 10 people at the party, each team makes 5 servings. Or have them make smaller portions. Left overs aren't so bad either....your guests could take some home.
Have fun!
